Work on the Room & Filter desk

Applications are rolling and postings rotate open and closed on a fixed 12-month rhythm, so this page always shows what is actually open. Every role exists to keep the site honest: figures traced to the published EPA CADR table, refusals where nobody published a number.

4 roles open nowRemoteHiring year-round

The desk at a glance

  • 4 roles open across 2 teams
  • Next window opens in September 2026: Community Moderator
  • Each posting runs 10 to 12 weeks, then rests before it returns

Fact-Checking Editor

Rolling applications

About 10 hours a week on a fixed review day.

View role

Every figure on this site traces to a published source, and you are the last line before it goes live. You check quotes, tables, dates and the retrieval chips, and you stop claims that lean on a rating nobody published. The job is slow reading and hard questions, not speed.

What you will do

  • Verify every figure, quote and retrieval date in a draft before publication.
  • Check that honest refusals appear wherever marketing implies a rating that does not exist.
  • Maintain the corrections log and the monthly re-verification sweep.
  • Sign off pages with a verification note the reader can see.

What we look for

  • Professional fact-checking, editing or research experience.
  • Patient with tables, footnotes and source documents.
  • Comfortable being the person who says not yet.
  • Working knowledge of how affiliate content can go quietly wrong.

Nice to have

  • Experience with regulatory or standards documents.
  • A system for tracking claims across many pages.

Illustration & Diagrams Contractor

Rolling applications

Per-diagram contracts, a steady trickle rather than a flood.

View role

Rooms, airflow, filter layers: most of our explanations get clearer as a diagram. You turn the published figures into honest pictures, where a bar is proportional because the numbers say so and nothing decorative implies a rating we do not have. Clean, calm, editorial style.

What you will do

  • Draw diagrams and illustrations for guides, the calculator and the compare tool.
  • Keep proportions honest when a visual encodes published figures.
  • Work inside the existing palette and typographic system.
  • Deliver assets the media library can serve, sized for retina screens.

What we look for

  • A portfolio of technical or editorial illustration.
  • Fluency in vector tools and export discipline.
  • Able to take a written brief and get it right in one pass, most of the time.
  • Comfort with light annotation, labels and units.

Nice to have

  • Motion or interactive diagram experience.
  • Familiarity with accessible colour contrast.

Home Air Quality Writer

Rolling applications

Full weeks with a reading budget on the clock, async deadlines.

View role

You write the room-by-room and buying-guide pages readers actually arrive on. Every piece starts from a real question and ends at the published figures, and the honest refusals are part of the writing, not a footnote. You never invent a number to make a paragraph land.

What you will do

  • Write and update guides sized on the published EPA minimum CADR per room area.
  • Cite every figure on the page where it appears, sources quoted rather than paraphrased.
  • Weave the two standing refusals into relevant pages: no published CADR for odours, and MERV is not a room-size rating.
  • Refresh older pages on a rolling schedule so nothing reads stale.

What we look for

  • Published writing samples that explain something technical clearly.
  • Comfortable writing inside strict sourcing rules.
  • Able to take an edit without an ego.
  • Reliable about deadlines in an async team.

Nice to have

  • Experience writing buyer-facing guides or product explainers.
  • Curiosity about indoor air, filtration or building science.

SEO Content Strategist

Posted 7d ago

Full weeks, written briefs, short recorded meetings.

View role

You decide what gets written next based on what people actually search, then hold the line on honesty while we go get it. The constraint is real: this site ranks because it is trustable, so the strategy can never drift into invented numbers or implied ratings. Search intent research, cluster planning, and the discipline to refuse the spammy version of a good idea.

What you will do

  • Maintain the keyword and cluster map across the five pillars.
  • Write briefs a writer can execute without inventing a single figure.
  • Watch search console for pages that deserve refreshes or consolidation.
  • Coordinate with the daily blog pipeline so posts compound instead of cannibalising each other.

What we look for

  • Two or more years of SEO content planning for an editorial site.
  • Comfortable with search console, keyword tools and basic analytics.
  • Able to balance traffic potential against the honesty rules.
  • Clear briefs, short meetings, everything written down.

Nice to have

  • Experience with programmatic or data-driven page templates.
  • Working knowledge of how Google AI Overviews and answer engines pick their sources.

How we hire

Four steps, paid from the task onward
Step 1

Apply by email

Send a short note to desk@roomandfilter.com with the role in the subject line. Tell us what you have worked on, skip the cover letter theatre.

Step 2

Async task

A small paid task that mirrors the real desk work, done on your schedule, usually within a few days.

Step 3

Paid trial week

A week of real work with the desk, paid from day one, so both sides see the honest version.

Step 4

Decision

A clear yes or no within days of the trial, with a reason either way. No ghosting.

What we offer

Remote first

The desk has no office. Work from where you are, on equipment you like.

Async by default

Meetings are rare and recorded. Decisions happen in writing, so your focus survives.

Research time budget

A slice of every week is paid reading time. Checking the source beats guessing.

Your byline

What you write carries your name and our sourcing rules, together.
