Filter Subscriptions: Read the Lock-In

Some makers sell the machine cheap and the filters on a plan. The word for this arrangement is not "convenience", it is a change to the ownership arithmetic, and it deserves reading before the first payment.

This page is that reading: what subscriptions change, where lock-in beats savings, and the check to make before subscribing to anything.

What a subscription changes#

A subscription filter flips the purchase: the unit becomes the membership card, and the ongoing relationship, the maker's cadence, the maker's filter, the maker's price revisions, is the product.

Proprietary filters are what make the flip possible. A filter only the maker supplies is a filter priced at whatever the maker thinks the relationship will bear, and no published rating exists to comparison-shop the consumable by.

Lock-in beats savings#

The honest concern with subscriptions is not the headline price, it is dependence. One supplier, one filter shape, no substitute: whether the plan "saves money" is decided entirely by figures the maker sets and can reset.

That is why this page names no figures. Prices change and belong to whoever sets them; the structure does not. A purchase whose running costs are set unilaterally is a purchase with an asterisk you did not sign.

Compare what the table asks for

Search listings for the published minimum your room needs, then check the smoke CADR on the shortlist before anything else.

Check third-party availability before subscribing#

The escape hatch from filter lock-in is a third-party supply, and it exists for some models and not others. The check belongs before the purchase of the unit, after, it is a discovery rather than a decision.

If third-party filters are stocked for the model you want, the subscription loses its teeth: it becomes an option rather than a toll. If they are not, you have read the arithmetic: check replacement filter availability first.

The questions to ask#

  • Is the filter proprietary, or does an ordinary replacement exist?
  • Are third-party versions stocked today, from more than one seller?
  • Can the subscription be paused, and does skipping a cycle void anything?
  • Does the maker publish the replacement interval, the one figure that makes any plan comparable?
