Furnace Filter or Air Purifier: Which First?
A furnace filter and a room air purifier both clean air, which is where the similarity ends and most of the confusion begins. They are two different jobs, graded by two different ratings, and neither substitutes for the other.

Two different jobs#
The furnace filter protects the system first and cleans air second: it sits in a duct, works only while the blower runs, and treats whatever the heating or cooling schedule sends through it.
The room purifier is a dedicated appliance: its own fan, its own schedule, sized to deliver cleaned air to one room while you are in it. One is a component; the other is the machine.
Two different ratings#
MERV grades a furnace filter's capture efficiency as air passes through it. CADR measures how much cleaned air a room unit delivers, in cubic feet per minute, for three particle types. The table says it compactly:

Why they are not substitutes#
There is no published conversion between MERV and CADR, and no honest way to pretend otherwise. A MERV 13 furnace filter is an excellent duct filter, EPA notes MERV 13 and above must demonstrate at least 50% removal of the smallest particles tested, and it still tells you nothing about the delivery in the room where you sit.
The reverse holds too: a room purifier with a strong CADR does nothing for the ducts, the coil, or the air moving through the rest of the house while the blower runs.
When you want both#
Both, when the ducts and the room have different problems: a MERV 13 furnace filter for what the system breathes, a room unit sized by CADR for where you actually spend your hours. They complement; they do not replace.
Renters take note: you may not own the furnace, but you breathe the air it moves, the furnace-filter conversation is worth having with a landlord. The room unit, meanwhile, is entirely yours: find MERV 13 furnace filters.
