What Is A HEPA filter, and Does It Matter?
the capture definition behind the HEPA name
It grades the filter. CADR sizes the unit.
HEPA is the most recognised word in air cleaning, and the most freely borrowed. Some of what is sold under it meets a published definition; some of it is a word on plastic.
Here is the definition, what a HEPA filter does inside a machine, and why the filter alone cannot tell you whether the machine is big enough for your room.
What a HEPA filter actually is#
A HEPA filter captures at least 99.97% of particles at 0.3 micron. That is the published standard definition, and it is precise: a specific capture percentage, at a specific particle size, under test conditions.
The definition describes the filter media and its construction. It says nothing about how much air is pushed through the filter, or how fast. Those are fan questions, not filter questions.
Why the filter is not the whole machine#
A filter captures; a fan delivers. A first-rate filter behind a timid fan cleans a small volume of air very well and does nothing for the rest of the room. The pairing of the two is what earns a CADR figure.
This is why the filter alone does not size the unit, CADR does. Two units can carry identical HEPA filters and deliver wildly different amounts of cleaned air.

Does it matter?#
Yes. A true HEPA stage is the backbone of particle capture, and the 99.97% definition is the reason: it is testable, published, and honest about what the media can do.
But it is a floor, not a specification for a room. Once a unit has a real HEPA stage, the meaningful comparison shifts to delivery, the CADR, and to the cost of keeping the filter stocked. When the time comes: find replacement HEPA filters that meet the definition.
What to check on the box#
- Language matching the definition: 99.97% of particles at 0.3 micron.
- Whether "HEPA" is doing definitional work or decorative work, see true HEPA below.
- A published CADR. The filter is the stage; CADR is the size.
- Whether replacement filters are described as readily available. A filter is a subscription to consumables, whether you signed up or not.
