195cfm minimum CADR

for a typical conservatory floor area

EPA table, 300 sq ft row · 8-ft ceiling · glazed roofs break the assumption

On paper a conservatory sizes like any room: between the 200 and 300 sq ft rows, the published minimum is 195 cfm.

In practice a conservatory breaks the table’s quiet assumption. The published rows assume an 8-foot ceiling; a glazed roof routinely doubles the height somewhere in the middle. The room you are cleaning is bigger than its floor area, the sun is loading it, and the vents are open to the garden’s pollen.

What the published table gives a conservatory#

For a floor between the 200 and 300 sq ft rows, 195 cfm is the published minimum, calculated, as every row is, for an 8-foot ceiling.

Under a glazed apex that assumption quietly fails. EPA says it directly: with higher ceilings, you may want a unit with a higher CADR. In a conservatory, take the next row up and call it the floor.

The glazed ceiling problem#

Volume, not floor area, is what the machine actually cleans, and a conservatory’s volume hides above the furniture. The published row is still the starting point; the apex is the reason not to stop there.

Sun, heat, and where the machine lives#

A sunny room changes placement. Keep the unit out of direct afternoon sun, where any machine works harder and ages faster, and give it clearance where the air can actually move.

Season changes the load. Open vents bring the garden in, pollen is a rated particle, and summer is its season. Closed season, the room’s own dust and whatever drifts under the door.

Units sized one row above the floor area suit conservatories more honestly than the bare minimum does.

Placement and running#

  • Near the seating zone, shaded, with clearance on every side.
  • Run it when the room is in use; a conservatory empties as often as it fills.
  • Vents open in pollen season means the load is outdoor-driven, expect to run it harder then.
  • Check the pre-filter after windy days; gardens donate generously.

What the box leaves out#

No "conservatory" rating exists, and the 8-foot assumption is the first thing a glazed roof voids. The smoke CADR column stays the honest comparator for fine particles.

Plant smells and damp cushions are gases: unrated, as everywhere.

One more angle before you decide

The minimum is settled, spend the rest of the decision on noise, filter cost and the smoke CADR.
