The likely causes#

1. 1The unit is undersized for the room. Find the room's floor area and the published minimum for it, 65 cfm at 100 square feet, 130 at 200, and so on, rounding up between rows. A unit below the row is working; it is just outnumbered.
2. 2The wrong rating was trusted at purchase. A coverage claim is not standardised and cannot be checked. If the buying decision rested on "covers up to", re-derive the size from the CADR on the label instead.
3. 3The filters are loaded past their life. A filter past the manufacturer's interval delivers less than the rating was tested with. Check the interval in the manual, they are manufacturer-set, and replace rather than vacuum-and-hope.
4. 4Source control is missing. Bedding, pet beds and soft furnishings regenerate particles faster than a small unit recovers them. Wash what can be washed; the purifier is a race entrant, not a broom.
5. 5Doors or windows are open. The published minimum assumes the room. An open door makes the effective space larger and leakier, and no published row covers the combination.

What "helping" can honestly mean#

The rating describes delivery of cleaned air for particles. What that does for symptoms is a matter for you and your nose, not for a spec sheet, but the mechanism only works if the delivery is real. Real means: meets the published minimum, runs continuously, door closed, filter within its interval.

Timing matters more than people expect. When it is the room, not the machine#

Measure the room and read the row. If the unit's CADR falls below the published minimum for the floor area, rounded up to the larger row when the room sits between sizes, no troubleshooting recovers the gap. The fix is a right-sized unit or a second one, not a new setting.

This is the single most common answer on this page, which is why it leads the checklist. Machines rarely fail at their job; rooms are just frequently bigger than the box implied.

When to stop troubleshooting#

Stop when the arithmetic says the unit cannot win, when the filter stays flagged after replacement, or when the machine shows fault behaviour, cutting out, rattling, refusing to run, rather than merely underwhelming results. At that point it is a conversation for the manufacturer's support line, with the warranty and the manual at hand.

Filter seating is the last cheap check: a filter that is not fully seated lets air bypass the media entirely. Beyond that, the unit's age and the manufacturer's own guidance decide.
