Where to Put an Air Purifier in a Room
Placement is the only free upgrade in air cleaning. The same unit, moved across the room and turned to face it, cleans more of it, and no published figure captures the difference, because the table assumes the unit is actually allowed to move air.
Four habits cover almost all of it: clearance, proximity, an unblocked intake, and a door that closes.
Clearance beats corner choice#
The intake has to reach air. Tuck a unit into a corner between a wall, a curtain and a laundry basket, and the rated CADR becomes a theoretical maximum the room never sees. The manufacturer publishes a clearance distance in the manual; it is the one placement figure worth reading.
Clearance also decides the corner question. A corner is not forbidden, but most corners starve at least one side, and many add a resonance problem on top. If the corner allows the manual's clearance on every side, it works; if it does not, the middle of a wall beats it.
Near the source beats the far end#
Particles are easiest to catch before they spread. The unit near the bed catches what the bed region produces; the unit across the room catches what is left. In a living room, that means near the sofa rather than beside the window nobody sits at.

Do not block the intake#
This is the most common placement failure, and fixing it costs nothing. Curtains, walls, furniture and piles of clothes each take a share of the intake. Take the pre-filter off from time to time and look: if it collects dust on one face only, something is probably pressed against that face.
The outlet matters too. Blowing straight at a wall wastes nothing, the air still mixes, but blowing at a shelf or sill lifts settled dust. Open air is the target.
Doors change the arithmetic#
The published minimum assumes the room. A closed door makes the assumption true; an open door makes the effective space larger than the room, leakier, and unpublishable. No row of the table covers "bedroom plus corridor plus kitchen".
Close the door while the unit runs, especially overnight. If the room cannot be closed, size the unit for the larger space it actually serves, and if that space is beyond the table, treat the largest published minimum as a floor, not an answer.
