Air Purifier Stopped working: Likely Causes

The likely causes#

1. 1Power brick and seating. Check the plug is fully in the wall, the connector fully into the unit, and any inline brick firmly joined. Half-seated connectors are the leading cause of machines that look dead.
2. 2The interlock. Many units will not run with the filter door or panel even slightly ajar, a deliberate design. Open the panel, re-seat the filter fully, and close the door until it clicks home.
3. 3A thermal cutoff after a clogged-filter stall. A severely loaded filter can choke the fan until the unit cuts out to protect itself. Replace the filter, let the unit cool, and try again.
4. 4The outlet itself. Test the socket with another device, or the unit in another socket. Wall switches, extension leads and timers fail more quietly than purifiers do.
5. 5After all that, the machine. If it stays silent on a proven outlet with a seated filter and a closed panel, the fault is inside, and the next step is the warranty, not the screwdriver.

Two mistakes that make it worse#

Do not defeat the interlock, taping a switch closed or running with the panel open defeats a safety design. And do not run the unit with the filter removed to "test" it: the test tells you little and sends unfiltered air and loose debris through the fan.

A unit that cut out on a clogged filter deserves suspicion, not a second shift: replace the filter first. Repeated cut-outs are support-line material, not a feature to be ridden.

When it is the room, not the machine#

A clogged-filter stall is usually the end of a longer story: a unit running flat out in a room larger than its rating loads its filter fast, and the stall is the last chapter. Check the CADR against the published minimum for the floor area, rounded up between published sizes.

A right-sized unit loads filters more slowly, meets thermal protection rarely or never, and generally retires of old age rather than workload.

When to stop troubleshooting#

Stop at the first sign of anything beyond simple seating: burning smells, repeated cut-outs, a fan that catches or grinds. Unplug and contact the manufacturer's support with the model and the symptoms; that is what the warranty is for.

Do not open the casing. Household units have no user-serviceable internals in most manuals, and opening one can end the warranty before it ends the fault.
