Air Purifier Too loud: Likely Causes
A loud air purifier is usually a mis-sized air purifier working flat out, or a small mechanical fault adding a rattle to a hum. Both are worth diagnosing before you consign the unit to a cupboard, and most of the fixes below cost nothing.
Run through the causes in order. The first one explains most cases, and its fix is arithmetic rather than engineering.
The likely causes#
- 1It is running on high because it is undersized. A unit below the published minimum for the room has no headroom, so it lives on its loudest speed. Compare its CADR with the published row for the floor area, rounding up between rows.
- 2The pre-filter panel is loose. A clip or panel not fully home vibrates against the casing. Remove it, re-seat it firmly, and listen for the change.
- 3The intake guard is rattling. Grilles and guards work loose with cleaning and handling. Check for play, and tighten whatever the manual says is user-serviceable.
- 4The speed is set higher than needed after upsizing. If the unit exceeds the room's minimum, step it down to the lowest speed that still meets the row. The headroom you bought is meant to be used quietly.
- 5It stands in a corner that resonates. Corners and hard, uneven surfaces can amplify a hum. Move it out from the corner, keep the manual's clearance, and give it a firm, even footing.
What quiet actually costs#
The permanent fix for a loud unit is usually not a quieter unit, it is a larger unit at a lower speed. A unit whose CADR sits comfortably above the room's published minimum meets the row while loafing, and fan speed is what you hear. That is the one good case for buying above the minimum.
Box noise figures will not guide you here: they are measured at specific speeds and are not comparable between brands. The manual's per-speed figures, where published, are the honest comparison.

When it is the room, not the machine#
Noise and sizing are the same question wearing different clothes. A unit loud enough to resent is often a unit too small for the room, running flat out to chase a minimum it cannot meet. Find the published row for the floor area, round up between published sizes, and treat the gap as the specification for a replacement.
Until then, lower the speed you can, and run it before occupancy rather than during: a head start at high speed with the door shut beats a flat-out all-nighter you cannot sleep through.
When to stop troubleshooting#
Stop when the noise is mechanical rather than aerodynamic, grinding, clicking, or a fan that catches, or when re-seating every panel and filter leaves the rattle in place. Those are manufacturer support and warranty conversations, not do-it-yourself ones.
Do not open the casing to hunt a rattle. The manual defines what you may service; everything else belongs to the manufacturer, especially while the unit is under warranty.
