High Ceilings Change the Purifier You Need
EPA states the basis of its CADR table
A 200 sq ft room with a 10-ft ceiling holds 2,000 cubic feet, not 1,600.
Every published CADR figure assumes one ceiling height: eight feet. EPA says so when it publishes the numbers, and it adds one line that most boxes leave out, if your ceilings are higher, you may want a portable air cleaner with a higher CADR.
How much higher is not published. There is no row for a ten-foot ceiling and no conversion factor to apply. What follows is honest arithmetic about volume, and an honest admission of where the published numbers stop.
The eight-foot assumption#
CADR is a delivery rate, but the published minimums are matched to floor area rather than to volume. That only works if every room is the same height. EPA's table assumes it: an eight-foot ceiling. A 200 square foot room is assumed to hold 1,600 cubic feet of air.
Your room did not agree to that assumption. If the ceiling is taller, the room holds more air than the published row was written for, and the same minimum clears it more slowly.
The arithmetic of a taller room#
Volume is area times height, and the arithmetic is unfussy. A 200 square foot room with a ten-foot ceiling holds 2,000 cubic feet, a quarter more than the assumed 1,600. At twelve feet it holds 2,400, half as much again.
How the correction scales is not published. EPA gives a direction, not a factor: higher ceilings, higher CADR. Anyone quoting you an exact percentage for a ten-foot ceiling is quoting arithmetic they made up.
There is no published row for ceilings#
This is the part where we decline to invent a number. EPA publishes six rows, and none of them mentions ceiling height beyond the eight-foot basis. No conversion table exists, and we will not fabricate one.
The defensible response is judgement, applied on the safe side. If your ceiling is well above eight feet, behave like a room one published size up and take that row's minimum: a 200 square foot room with a tall ceiling takes the 300 square foot row, 195 cfm. That is not EPA guidance, it is our reading of it, and it errs towards the unit that is big enough.

Where it matters, and where it does not#
It matters most in the rooms people care about: bedrooms with vaulted ceilings, loft conversions, living rooms with double-height windows. It matters least in an ordinary bedroom with an eight-foot ceiling, where the published row already applies exactly as written.
Between those extremes, read the shape of the space. A small sleeping loft under a sloped roof holds less air than its floor area suggests at full height. Look up before you round up.
The honest summary#
The published minimum for your floor area, taken from the next row up if your ceiling is tall, is a defensible answer. Pretending that a precise ceiling correction exists is not. The table gets you to the right unit; the ceiling judgement only ever moves you one row in one direction.
