ENERGY STAR Certified Air Purifiers
ENERGY STAR appears on air purifiers as a badge of virtue, and it is, for electricity. The certification speaks to energy use, not to clean air delivery, and reading it as the second kind of badge is how the wrong machine gets sized.
Here is what the label covers, what it does not, and where it belongs in a decision built on published figures.
What the certification covers#
ENERGY STAR is a certification for energy performance: it says the unit meets a published standard for how much electricity it draws in doing its work. That is a real, checkable, third-party figure.
Purifiers are appliances that run for hours at a stretch, often all day, which makes the electricity question a fair one to ask. The badge exists precisely because the question has an answer worth standardising.
What it does not cover#
Clean air delivery. The certification does not size a unit, does not grade its capture, and carries no CADR information. An efficient machine that is too small for the room is an efficiently wrong machine.
The sizing figure remains CADR, measured for dust, pollen and tobacco smoke, set against EPA's published minimum for your room area. No energy label adjusts that arithmetic.
