Cheap vs Expensive Air Purifiers: What More Money Buys

The gap between a cheap purifier and an expensive one is real, but it is not the gap the boxes imply. The extra money buys specific, nameable things, and only some of them carry a published rating.

Here is where the money goes, which of it is checkable, and what the cheap end does perfectly well.

Where the extra money goes#

  • Higher CADR per watt, more cleaned air for the electricity it draws.
  • Quieter running at the same delivered CADR, better fans, better housing.
  • Better seals and build, air goes through the filter rather than around it.
  • Sensors and auto modes, the machine adjusts itself instead of waiting for you to.

Which of that carries a published rating#

CADR does, all of it. Delivery per watt is checkable from the published CADR figure and the unit's rated power, and the smoke/dust/pollen split is printed for every unit that plays the game. The core of the expensive case is checkable.

Energy certification exists too, ENERGY STAR speaks to electricity use, which is a fair second filter after CADR. Noise figures are published but speed-specific and not comparable across brands. And the app features? No published rating at all. They are the only row in the comparison sold purely on faith.

What the money buysPublished rating?
Clean air delivery (CADR)Yes, measured, comparable between brands
Electricity useYes, ENERGY STAR certification exists
NoiseFigures published, but speed-specific and not comparable
App and auto featuresNo published rating anywhere
The checkable rows are where the comparison lives.

What the cheap end does perfectly well#

A cheap unit whose smoke CADR clears the published minimum for your room has done the job it is rated for. There is no moral premium in paying past the floor, the minimum is the minimum, whichever badge is on the housing.

The honest upgrade path is not always upward: money not spent on capacity you cannot use is money available for the filters you will be buying for years. The recurring half of the purchase does not care what the badge says.

The honest order of decisions#

Size first: the published minimum for your room, rounded up between rows. Then the smoke CADR, then the ceiling note if it applies. Those checks cost nothing and disqualify cheaply.

Only then do features enter, quiet running, efficiency, sensors, as tie-breakers between units that have already passed. Compare on the figures that are published: compare air purifiers on the figures that are published.
