Car Air Purifiers: The Sizing Problem

Car air purifiers are sold with the confidence of a solved problem, and this page is here to report that the numbers do not exist. There is no published CADR minimum for a cabin volume, the room table stops at houses.

What follows is what can honestly be said: what does most of the work in a car, what a portable unit can and cannot do, and why the honest verdict is smaller than the marketing.

No published minimum for a cabin#

EPA's published table pairs room areas with minimum CADR figures, and it stops at 600 sq ft of house. A car cabin is a much smaller, differently-shaped volume with its own airflow, no row covers it, and no honest conversion exists.

This site does not invent numbers, which is why this page will not tell you what CADR your car needs. Neither, in published form, does anyone else.

What does most of the work anyway#

The car does. The engine and vent intake pull outside air through the vehicle's own filtration, and the cabin filter, a MERV-analogue specified by the vehicle maker, is sized and tested for that job by people who built the airflow it sits in.

If the air in your car smells or fogs, the honest first move is the cabin filter the manufacturer specified, not a gadget on the passenger seat. It is also the one part of this page with an engineering standard behind it.

What a portable unit can and cannot do#

A portable unit recirculates a small volume, and small volumes turn over quickly, that much is in its favour. What is not in its favour: no published CADR exists for any of these devices at cabin scale, so there is no checkable figure to size or compare them by.

It is, honestly, a second stage of unknown delivery. It may help; nothing published lets you say how much, and the claim on the box is not a measurement.

The honest verdict#

Start with the cabin filter, fresh and correctly specified for the vehicle. Keep the windows-and-vents habits that make the car's own airflow work. Treat a portable purifier as an accessory with no published rating, permissible, unverified, and honestly labelled as such.

No CTA accompanies this page, on principle: there is no figure behind the purchase, and this site does not rush you toward purchases it cannot size. If you still want one after that, you will find the aisle without our help.
