Small rooms are the easiest place in this whole category to buy well, because the published minimum is low and the rest of the budget is free to work elsewhere.
The mistake is spending it on capacity you cannot use. Here is where it goes instead.
The bar is low, and that is the point#
For a 100 sq ft room, EPA publishes a minimum CADR of 65 cfm, on an eight-foot ceiling. Rooms below the smallest published row are covered by that same smallest minimum, there is nothing smaller to round down to.
So the sizing question in a small room is settled quickly: a unit at or above the published minimum does the job it is rated for. Everything beyond that is not sizing. It is choosing.
Spend on noise instead of capacity#
A small room keeps the machine close, beside the bed, behind the desk chair. A unit with CADR headroom can meet the room's needs at a lower fan speed, and low speeds are where quiet lives.
Published decibel figures are speed-specific and not comparable across brands, so the honest test is your own: how it sounds on the speed that delivers the minimum. In a small room, that check is worth more than another hundred cfm.

Spend on filter cost instead of capacity#
The filters are the recurring half of the purchase, on a cadence only the maker sets. A small unit with cheap, widely stocked filters out-owns a small unit with proprietary ones, whatever the badge on the front says.

Sizing still applies#
A low bar is still a bar. A room between published rows takes the larger row, and a small room with a tall ceiling or an unusual load, smokers, pets, wildfire weeks, deserves the headroom the round-up gives it.
The minimum is a floor, not a target. In small rooms the floor is close, the headroom is cheap, and the savings belong to noise and filter economics. That is the whole strategy.
