DIY Box Fan Air Filters: What Can Be Said
The box fan air filter is the category's favourite folk build: a box fan, a furnace filter, some tape, and a weekend. It is shared widely, built widely, and, this is the part this page exists to say, it has no published CADR.
That absence is not a technicality. It is the exact boundary between what is known about this build and what is hoped.
The build, briefly#
The widely shared version: a standard box fan with a MERV-rated furnace filter taped to its intake side, edges sealed as well as the builder's patience allows. The fan draws air through the filter; the filter catches particles.
Parts are cheap and everywhere, which is a large part of the build's appeal. The other part is the feeling of outsmarting an industry, and the honesty of this page depends on how that feeling is treated.
What is known#
A box fan moves air; that much is printed on its own box. A MERV-rated furnace filter captures particles, and MERV 13 and above must demonstrate at least 50% removal efficiency for the smallest particles tested, which is a real, published line.
So the two halves of the build are each rated. The fan moves air; the filter captures particles. Both claims are checkable, and neither is in dispute here.

Compare what the table asks for
Search listings for the published minimum your room needs, then check the smoke CADR on the shortlist before anything else.
What is not known#
Everything after the halves are joined. No published CADR exists for the assembly, nobody has measured how much cleaned air the combination delivers, which is precisely the figure that sizes a purifier.
A fan's cfm rating is not a CADR: it counts air moved, not air filtered. Joining a rated fan to a rated filter does not produce a rated machine, and pretending otherwise is how the build outruns its evidence.
If you build one anyway#
- Use a real MERV-rated filter, MERV 13 or above if smallest particles are the concern.
- A denser filter asks more of the fan; the pairing deserves a listen, not an assumption.
- Seal the edges properly, air that goes around the filter does no filtering.
- Run it where you sit, and judge it by what changes in your room, not by what the build promised.

One more angle before you decide
The minimum is settled, spend the rest of the decision on noise, filter cost and the smoke CADR.
