How Often Should You Replace A UV lamp?

No public standard sets the interval

The manufacturer's figure for your model is the only one there is.

The honest answer is: the manufacturer's interval for your model. There is no public standard for UV lamp replacement, and the uncomfortable part is that for this one stage, the calendar is nearly all you have.

Here is why the lamp fools the eye, what the interval is actually tracking, and the arithmetic to do before you own a lamp at all.

What sets the interval#

A UV lamp's working life depends on its run hours and on the lamp's construction, the chemistry inside decides how long it holds output. The maker knows which lamp sits in your unit and writes the interval from that.

Usage patterns matter as they do for any stage: a lamp that runs whenever the fan runs accumulates hours much faster than the manual's average owner.

What decays is the output, not the lamp#

UV output fades long before the lamp stops glowing. The visible glow, often a byproduct of the lamp's chemistry rather than the useful wavelength, tells you nothing about whether the light can still do its work.

This is the stage with no useful visible signs: no greying, no airflow drop, no smell. The maker's interval is not the floor here; for once, it is close to the whole story.

The signs that beat the calendar#

  • There mostly are none visible, which is the sign.
  • A sleeve or window that has fogged or filmed over, where the design allows you to look.
  • The unit's own service indicator, if it has one, still a timer, but a timer written for this lamp.
  • The maker's interval, followed rather than stretched. This is the one stage where stretching is done blind.

Replacement arithmetic#

UV lamps are recurring consumables on a maker-set cadence, and the honest question is whether the feature justifies that cadence for your model. UV is a feature, not a sizing basis, EPA's table grants no UV credit, and the CADR still decides whether the unit fits your room.

Check lamp availability and cost of ownership before buying any unit that leads with UV; a feature priced in periodic lamps is a subscription in disguise.
