The honest answer up front: no air purifier makes a room safe from viruses, and no CADR exists for them. What EPA’s guidance offers is a layered plan, ventilation and air cleaning together, alongside distance and time, in which the purifier is one layer with a role, not the plan with a promise.
What the machine can honestly do is its rated work: remove particles from the air, including the respiratory particles that carry viruses. That is a meaningful layer. It is not a shield, and any box implying one is selling confidence the rating does not contain.
Why there is no rating#
CADR measures delivery of smoke, dust and pollen particles to a room. Viruses are not one of the three test particles, and no published CADR exists for virions.
The honest technical position: viruses travel on respiratory particles, which fall within what filtration removes. That links the machine to the problem without giving it a rating for it, the distinction the whole pillar turns on.
What actually works#
EPA’s own guide treats ventilation and air cleaners as parts of one approach. Read that sentence again for its shape: parts, plural, of an approach, not a device that ends the problem.
- Ventilation first: fresh air exchange dilutes what every other layer misses.
- Air cleaning as a layer: a correctly sized unit, run continuously, removes particles from the room’s air.
- Distance and time: fewer, shorter, better-ventilated encounters.
- Ordinary hygiene: the layers stack; none of them works alone.
What the box implies#
"Kills 99% of viruses" on a consumer box is not a CADR claim, and the asterisks doing the work are never about your room.
The machine’s honest contribution is stated plainly elsewhere on this site: the published CADR for the room, run continuously, with the windows doing their share.
