How Often Should You Replace An ioniser plate?

The honest answer is: the manufacturer's guidance for your model, and for the ioniser plate, the guidance is mostly about washing rather than replacing. The plate is the rare stage whose routine maintenance is a rinse and whose replacement is an event.
Here is what the plate collects, when to wash it, and the small print about when it truly needs replacing.
What sets the interval#
The plate collects what the ionisation charges: particles that cling to it instead of staying airborne. How fast it loads depends on run hours and the particle load of the room, smoky or dusty air greys a plate quickly.
Construction sets the rest: plate design and coating differ by maker, and so does the washing method they specify. There is no public standard; there is only the manual.
What the plate actually collects#
Everything the ioniser charged that did not land on your walls has landed here, fine dust, soot marks, the occasional dramatic grey felt of a unit that runs near a kitchen.
It is worth opening the plate bay occasionally just to know which of those you have. The load is visible, which makes this the one charged stage whose condition you can actually read.
The signs that beat the calendar#
- Visible lint or film across the plate, wash when linted; that is the rhythm.
- Clicking or snapping from the unit, which points to a plate that is dirty, wet or not seated dry.
- A film that survives a wash, coating wear, not load.
- Cracks or bent pins: maker-replacement territory, not cleaning territory.
Replacement arithmetic#
Plates are usually washable for the life of the unit, with replacement reserved for damage, and only the maker can say what counts. The honest expectation: near-zero recurring cost, occasional attention, and spares availability checked before you buy.
One honesty note that outranks the rest: EPA's table grants no CADR benefit for ionisation, so a spotless plate is maintenance of a feature, not an upgrade to the numbers that size the unit.
