What Is An ozone generator, and Does It Matter?

What an ozone generator actually does#

It generates ozone, a reactive form of oxygen, and releases it into the room. Ozone reacts chemically with some odour molecules and with some microorganisms. That reaction is real, and so is the sales pitch built on it.

What the pitch omits: ozone reacts with living tissue too. The property that makes it aggressive towards smells is the same property that makes it aggressive towards lungs.

What EPA's guide says#

Devices sold as "ozone air purifiers" occupy the same category. The rebranding does not change the chemistry, and the chemistry does not care about the packaging.

Does it matter?#

No, for occupied spaces, the verdict is simply no. Never buy one for "clean air". There is no published CADR for an ozone generator, because delivery of a lung irritant is not what the rating measures.

If a listing implies ozone is a premium feature, read it as a signpost pointing away. The honest tools are unglamorous: a HEPA stage sized by CADR, and a carbon stage for odours, with the honest caveat that no published CADR exists for odours either.

What to check instead#

• A published CADR above the minimum for your room, the ordinary, checkable route to clean air.
• A real HEPA stage for particles and a real carbon stage for odours.
• Any marketing that blurs ozone into "ionisation" or "fresh air", blur is the product there.
• Your own nose: air should smell of nothing in particular, not of a storm.
