What Is Activated carbon, and Does It Matter?

What activated carbon actually does#

Activated carbon is carbon processed to be extremely porous. Gas-phase molecules, the things you smell, lodge on that vast internal surface. The process is adsorption: the gas sticks to the carbon instead of staying in the air.

That makes carbon the only mainstream stage that addresses odours, cooking smells and some household gases. HEPA media, superb as it is with particles, lets every one of those molecules pass straight through.

Why there is no CADR for odours#

CADR is defined for particles, dust, pollen and tobacco smoke. There is no published CADR for gases, odours or VOCs, so no minimum exists for any room size.

This is not a technicality. It means an odour-removal claim on a box is not a figure you can compare between brands the way you can compare a smoke CADR. The honest position: carbon matters, and its performance is not standardised.

Does it matter?#

Partly. If odours are your problem, carbon is the right tool and the absence of a rating is not a reason to skip it, it is a reason to read the claim carefully.

Carbon quantity and quality are not comparable between brands: the weight, thickness and treatment of the media all vary, and none of them carry a published number. What you can compare is whether replacement carbon is actually stocked for the model you are considering: find activated carbon filters.

What to check on the box#

• Whether carbon is a real, separate stage, or a thin dressing on the HEPA media.
• Any stated quantity of carbon, and whether the maker publishes a replacement interval for it.
• Odour claims phrased as ratings. There is no published CADR for odours; nothing on the box can honestly look like one.
• Replacement availability before you buy the unit. Carbon saturates and needs replacing on the maker's schedule.
