What Is PM2.5, and Does It Matter?

What PM2.5 actually means#

PM stands for particulate matter; the number in the name is the particle size in microns. PM2.5 is the fraction of airborne particles up to 2.5 microns across, the fine fraction, small enough to travel deep and stay suspended for a long time.

It is reported as a concentration: how much of this material is in the air of a given place. Smoke, and the finer end of combustion generally, dominates the reading.

Where it appears in the ratings#

PM2.5 is a room measure; CADR is a unit measure. The bridge between them is the test particle: the tobacco-smoke CADR is measured on the smallest particles in the standard test, which is the class PM2.5 describes.

EPA's guidance says it directly, to remove small particles, choose a portable air cleaner with a high CADR for tobacco smoke. That is the PM2.5 connection, and it is the honest one.

Does it matter?#

Yes, as the thing you are actually trying to change, the fine-particle content of the air in your room. A monitor can show you the before and after; the published CADR table tells you how much delivery the room needs.

But it is a room measure, not a unit measure. A machine advertising its ability to "reduce PM2.5" is describing your air, not quoting a rating about itself. The checkable figure remains its smoke CADR.

What to check on the box#

• The tobacco-smoke CADR, which is the test figure that speaks to the fine fraction.
• A smoke CADR above the published minimum for your room area, rounded up.
• Whether a "PM2.5" claim describes a sensor in the room or a rating of the machine, they are different statements.
• Placement sense: a room measure belongs at breathing height, not beside the machine's own clean-air outlet.
