Do Air Purifiers Help With Wildfire Smoke?

rated, compare the smoke CADR for the smallest particles

CADR is published for smoke, dust and pollen; smoke marks the fine end

The honest answer first: wildfire smoke is a particle problem, and particle problems are the one thing air cleaners carry a published rating for. EPA's advice for small particles is to compare the tobacco-smoke CADR, because it represents the smallest particles tested.

The honest caveat follows immediately: a smoke event is also a building problem. The cheapest particle is the one that never gets in. Closed windows, sealed gaps and a purifier sized to the room are one plan, not three options.

Is wildfire smoke a particle?#

The visible plume and the invisible residue are both carrying particles. They are the rated part of the problem, the part EPA's CADR test exists for.

The smell that rides along with it is partly gas-phase. Gases have no published CADR at any room size, which is why a smoke event leaves the machine doing its rated work while the odour lingers or does not.

What the rating covers#

CADR is published for three test particles: smoke, dust and pollen. Smoke is the smallest, and EPA says directly: to remove small particles, choose a unit with a high tobacco-smoke CADR.

For wildfire smoke, that sentence is the whole buyer's guide. The smoke column outranks every other figure on the box.

What sizing means during a smoke event#

The room minimum still governs: a floor between the 100 and 200 sq ft rows takes 130 cfm, between the 300 and 400 sq ft rows 260 cfm, and so on, always the published row, rounded up between rows.

During an event, the room changes character. Windows shut for days, everyone home, doors opening for necessities. Run the unit continuously for the duration, and treat units built to run for days as the sensible shortlist.

Limits and honest caveats#

  • Keep the smoke out first: windows closed, gaps sealed. The cheapest particle is the one that never enters.
  • Run continuously during the event. Particles return when the machine stops.
  • Expect filters to load faster during heavy smoke; check the pre-filter daily.
  • The smell is gas-phase and unrated. Carbon helps some; there is no number behind it.

Where the marketing overreaches#

A "wildfire mode" is a fan speed with a name. The rated work is the same CADR that governs any other day, and the smoke column is the only figure that tells you how the machine handles the fine end.

Coverage claims beyond the published table, the one that ends at 600 sq ft, are arithmetic nobody published.
