195cfm minimum CADR

for a typical attic room floor area

EPA table, 300 sq ft row · 8-ft ceiling · low slopes shrink the volume

An attic room between the 200 and 300 sq ft rows takes 195 cfm at an 8-foot ceiling, the same arithmetic as any other room, applied to the house’s hardest-working ceiling.

Attics bend the assumptions. Low slopes shrink the usable volume below what the floor area suggests, which pushes the other way from tall-ceiling rooms: the published row may over-deliver here. Summer loads the room with heat the machine cannot touch, and works on the roof load it with dust it must.

What the published table gives an attic room#

The row for a floor between the 200 and 300 sq ft rows is 195 cfm. With low eaves cutting the volume, the row errs generous, which, on a site built around minimums, is the correct direction to be wrong.

Low slopes and honest volume#

Where the ceiling drops below head height, the room’s volume is smaller than its floor plan admits. The published row assumes 8 feet of ceiling; a knee-walled attic has less air to clean than its floor area claims.

The honest read: keep the floor-area row as the minimum, and know the machine has an easier job than the number implies. Being over-served is a luxury most rooms do not get.

Heat and works dust#

Summer in an attic room is a heat problem, and a purifier moves particles, not temperature. Do not let a fan’s job be reassigned to it.

Insulation or roofing works change the picture entirely: works dust is a particle load far beyond daily life. Seal the door, run the unit continuously through the works, and check the pre-filter often, it will be visibly earning its keep.

Compare units sized to the floor area and expect to clean the pre-filter far more often during works than after them.

Placement and running#

  • Where headroom and clearance survive; the lowest corner is the worst place for a machine that needs airflow.
  • Out of the direct sun through the roof windows.
  • Run it while the room is used; attics empty as often as they fill.
  • After works, a main-filter check is the honest maintenance.
