A working garage zone between the 400 and 600 sq ft rows takes 390 cfm, the table’s last published minimum. The arithmetic is ordinary. The room is not.
A workshop makes two categories of air problem, and only one of them is rated. Sanding dust is a particle; CADR applies. Exhaust fumes, solvent vapours and fuel gases are gas-phase; no published CADR exists for any of them, and a purifier must never be relied on for those. Ventilation is that job.

Between 400 and 600 sq ft, the published minimum is 390 cfm at an 8-foot ceiling.

Dust is rated. Fumes are not.#
Wood dust, sanding dust and filings that go airborne are particles. CADR applies, and the smoke column marks the fine end worth comparing.
Everything that burns, evaporates or off-gasses is another matter. Exhaust, solvent vapours, petrol fumes: gas-phase, unrated, and outside what any consumer machine can honestly claim.

What the filter sees in a workshop#
Workshop air loads filters faster than any room in the house. The pre-filter does the heavy lifting; keep it clean and expect the main filter to need attention sooner than a living room’s would.
If a furnace or air handler shares the garage, note that MERV rates a filter’s capture efficiency, not the room. EPA’s line is that filters rated MERV 13 and above must demonstrate at least 50% removal efficiency for the smallest particles tested, nothing in that sentence converts to square feet.
Placement and running#
Compare workshop-sized units on the smoke CADR column and the pre-filter’s accessibility, in that order.
- Near the bench zone where dust is made, with clearance on every side.
- Never directly downstream of an exhaust source, whatever the rating says.
- Run while working and for a while after; dust hangs.
- Open the door when the work allows. Ventilation does the unrated work.
