Air Purifier for a Guest room: What Size You Need
for a typical guest room
EPA table, 200 sq ft row · 8-ft ceiling
A guest room is a bedroom that works part-time, and the sizing is identical: between the 100 and 200 sq ft rows, the published minimum is 130 cfm at an 8-foot ceiling.
The differences are scheduling and guests. Run it before they arrive rather than after they complain, and compare the smoke CADR if smoke is ever in the picture, it is the column EPA points to for the smallest particles, which is where smoke’s particles concentrate.
What the published table gives a guest room#
A floor between the 100 and 200 sq ft rows takes 130 cfm; smaller floors take the 65 cfm row, larger ones the 195. The rounding rule is the site-wide one: between two rows, take the larger.
Same sizing as a bedroom, different calendar#
Start the machine hours before a guest arrives, not minutes. Clean air is delivered in real time, an hour of panic cannot repay a season of nothing.
While they stay, run it as you would a bedroom: low, continuous, door position matching reality.
The smoke CADR, and why it matters here#
EPA advises comparing the tobacco-smoke CADR when small particles are the concern, because it represents the smallest of the three tested classes. Smoke, a guest’s habit or a neighbour’s drift, is the finest-particle problem a guest room meets.
The honest order of operations: no indoor smoking first. A purifier is rated for the particles that remain, not permission for the habit.
Compare bedroom-sized units on the smoke column and the low setting; guests notice both.
Suggested next step
Compare what the table asks for
Search listings for the published minimum your room needs, then check the smoke CADR on the shortlist before anything else.
Placement and running#
- Near the bed but not blowing at it, out of the curtain line.
- Run before the visit and during; rest it after.
- Make the bed with it running, linen sheds, and resuspended dust is exactly its job.
What the box leaves out#
Guest-room odour claims, air fresheners especially, have no published number behind them. The rated work is particles; the smells are gases.

One more angle before you decide
The minimum is settled, spend the rest of the decision on noise, filter cost and the smoke CADR.
