65cfm minimum CADR

for the smallest published row

EPA table, 100 sq ft row · 8-ft ceiling · hallways sit under it

Most hallways sit under the smallest published row. There is no row below 100 sq ft, so the floor is 65 cfm at an 8-foot ceiling, generous for a corridor, which is the right direction to err.

But a hallway is barely a room at all. Doors open on both sides and it is part of every room it joins; doors close and it is a corridor with almost no load. Placement and clearance matter more here than any corner-choice folklore.

What the published table gives a hallway#

Below 100 sq ft there is nothing smaller to round down to. The 100 sq ft row, 65 cfm, is the floor, and for most hallways it over-delivers honestly.

The published minimum assumes a room. A hallway only becomes one when its doors are open; closed, it is a passage, and passages have little air to clean.

A corridor is not a room#

A unit in the hallway does not launder the home. EPA’s minimums are per room, and a machine serving a passage under the smallest row is not quietly covering the living room behind the door.

What hallway placement does do: help the doorways. With doors open, air commutes, and a hallway unit sits at the junction. That is a bonus, not a sizing strategy.

Placement and running#

If the hallway is your only slot, compare compact units with depth in mind: the machine that blocks the passage will be moved, and a moved machine is a decorative one.

  • Where clearance survives a narrow space; not jammed between coat rack and shoe pile.
  • Cabling flat and tidy, hallways are where people walk.
  • Run it when the doors are open and the traffic is real; a closed-up corridor needs nothing.

What the box leaves out#

"Put it in the hall and it covers the home" is not a published claim. The rows are per room, full stop.

Hall smells, shoes, coats, the world’s weather, are gases with no published CADR. The rated work is particles.
