Air Purifier for a Living Room: What Size You Need

260cfm minimum CADR

for a typical living room

EPA table, 400 sq ft row · 8-ft ceiling

The living room is usually the largest furnished space in the home, and the sizing is the same unglamorous arithmetic: floor area, published row, round up between rows. Between the 300 and 400 sq ft rows that minimum is 260 cfm.

What makes this room different is everything in it. Sofas, shelves, doors and people interrupt airflow, and the room changes shape through the day. The published minimum is a floor, not a forecast, and if anyone smokes, or the kitchen drifts in, the smoke CADR is the column that matters.

What the published table gives a living room#

For a floor area between 300 and 400 sq ft, EPA publishes a minimum of 260 cfm at an 8-foot ceiling. Larger open living spaces that cross the 500 sq ft row take 325 cfm; past 600 sq ft the table stops and no stated minimum exists.

Furniture does not deliver clean air#

A living room is not an empty test chamber. Sofas and bookshelves shadow the airflow, and every open door widens the volume the unit is quietly serving. The published minimum assumes a room; yours also contains a small obstacle course.

The honest implication: the row is where sizing starts, not where it ends. If the room feels under-served in use, dust returning quickly, particles lingering, the published minimum was a floor and your room is telling you so.

Smoke, and the CADR column that matters#

CADR is published for three test particles: smoke, dust and pollen. Smoke represents the smallest of the three. If anyone smokes indoors, or cooking smoke drifts in from the kitchen, or the fireplace backs up, the tobacco-smoke CADR is the figure to compare, EPA points to it precisely because it marks the smallest particles.

The smells attached to smoke are a different matter: gases carry no published CADR at all.

This is also the room where a properly sized larger machine earns its floor space, large-room models exist for exactly this arithmetic.

Placement and running#

  • Open floor space beats a corner behind the sofa; airflow is the product.
  • Not directly in a walkway where it becomes a trip hazard.
  • Run it during the hours the room is used, and give cooking and fireplace evenings a head start.
  • Clear the pre-filter when you can see dust on it, living rooms collect visibly.

What the box leaves out#

A 'covers your whole home' claim has no published backing. EPA's minimums are per room, and the living room's row says nothing about the kitchen behind the wall.

Odour-removal claims carry no number either. The room's particles are rated; its smells are not.
