A loft conversion between the 200 and 300 sq ft rows takes a published minimum of 195 cfm, measured, like every row, against an 8-foot ceiling.
Lofts break that assumption in both directions. The slopes cut the volume low at the edges; the apex lifts it high in the middle. A floor-area row under-reads a tall apex, and EPA says so directly: with higher ceilings, you may want a higher CADR.

Knee walls and slopes make part of the floor area nearly unusable volume; the apex makes another part of it more than the row assumes. The two partly cancel, which is why floor area remains the starting point rather than a wrong answer.
The failure mode is under-sizing for the apex and blaming the machine. The published minimum plus the ceiling note is the honest sum.
