195cfm minimum CADR

for a typical rented living room

EPA table, 300 sq ft row · 8-ft ceiling

Size the room the unit stands in, as always: a rented flat’s main room between the 200 and 300 sq ft rows takes 195 cfm at an 8-foot ceiling.

The rented flat is the natural home of the portable purifier. It needs no ducts, no install, no consent form, plug it in, and take it with you. That is the whole point, and it is worth stating plainly against the alternative: changes to a flat’s furnace or air handler usually do need the landlord.

What the published table gives a rented flat#

Per room, as ever: 100 sq ft takes 65 cfm, up to 600 sq ft at 390 cfm. A main room between the 200 and 300 sq ft rows takes 195 cfm; a bedroom between the 100 and 200 sq ft rows takes 130 cfm.

The table’s assumptions travel with it: an 8-foot ceiling, one room at a time. A flat is a collection of those problems, not one big one.

No install, no ducts, no landlord#

A portable purifier is a plug-in appliance. It arrives, it runs, it moves house with you, no ducting, no drilling, no letter to the managing agent. Among air-quality upgrades it is the least invasive by a distance.

Its honest limit: it covers the room it is in. Portable units sized per room do the rated work; the flat’s total floor area does not enter the sum.

Compare what the table asks for

Search listings for the published minimum your room needs, then check the smoke CADR on the shortlist before anything else.

If the flat has a furnace or air handler#

Some rentals run on central air with a filter slot. MERV rates that filter’s capture efficiency, it is not a room-size rating, and no published table converts MERV into square feet.

EPA’s relevant line: filters rated MERV 13 and above must demonstrate at least 50% removal efficiency for the smallest particles tested. Whether you may change the filter at all is a tenancy question, and the answer lives in your agreement, not on the box.

Placement and running#

  • Bedroom unit overnight, main room unit by day, or one unit, moved, sized to whichever room it stands in.
  • Clearance on every side; not wedged behind the sofa the day of viewings.
  • Take it when you leave. It is the one air-quality investment that packs.

The minimum is settled, spend the rest of the decision on noise, filter cost and the smoke CADR.
