Air Purifier for a Utility Room: What Size You Need

65cfm minimum CADR

for the smallest published row

EPA table, 100 sq ft row · 8-ft ceiling · most utility rooms sit under it

Utility rooms are usually under the smallest published row, so 65 cfm at an 8-foot ceiling is the floor, generous for the space, which is the right direction.

The room splits honestly in two. Appliance lint is a particle, and particles are rated. Detergent and softener vapours are gases, and gases carry no published CADR. If a furnace or air handler also lives in here, there is a third fact to keep straight: MERV is the filter’s rating, not a room-size rating.

What the published table gives a utility room#

Below 100 sq ft there is no smaller row to round down to; the 100 sq ft row, 65 cfm, covers the space with room to spare.

Lint is rated. Fumes are not.#

Dryer lint that escapes into the air is a particle problem, dust-class and rated. A properly vented dryer is the source control that matters; the purifier is the second line.

Detergent and softener vapours are gas-phase, and no published CADR exists for them. The box’s "fresh laundry" promise is decorating an unrated claim.

If the furnace lives here#

Many homes keep the furnace or air handler in the utility room, which is where MERV confusion starts. MERV rates a filter’s capture efficiency. It says nothing about room size, and EPA publishes no MERV-by-room-area table.

What EPA does publish: filters rated MERV 13 and above must demonstrate at least 50% removal efficiency for the smallest particles tested. That is a filter sentence, not a room sentence.

If the air handler takes one, MERV 13 filters are the honest upgrade for the ducted side, sized by the system, not by this room’s floor area.

Placement and running#

  • Clearance on every side; not wedged behind the washer where heat and lint converge.
  • Out of the dryer’s exhaust path.
  • Run it while appliances run; the room’s particle events are cyclical.
  • Keep the dryer vent short and intact, the best filter is a well-routed one.
