Air Purifier Blowing dusty air: Likely Causes

The likely causes#

1. 1The pre-filter is clogged and re-entraining dust. The pre-filter's job is catching the big, visible stuff first. Loaded past its limit, it sheds what it holds back into the airflow. Wash or vacuum it as the manual directs.
2. 2The filter is seated wrong, so air bypasses. A filter not fully home leaves gaps around the edges, and air takes the gaps, unfiltered. Remove it, check for shipping tape or foam plugs, and re-seat it until it stops moving.
3. 3The unit sits on carpet it kicks up. A strong outlet over soft flooring stirs settled dust each time it runs. Raise the unit as the manual allows, or move it to a harder surface.
4. 4The inlet faces the floor. An intake low to the ground drinks from the dustiest layer of the room, especially on hard floors. Turn or reposition the unit so the intake draws from open air.
5. 5The outlet is aimed at a dusty surface. Blowing straight at a shelf, sill or curtain lifts settled dust back into circulation. Point the outlet into open room air.

Dust that was always going to escape#

A purifier captures airborne particles; it does nothing about the dust already settled on a shelf except hope it stays there. Anything that disturbs the room, vacuuming, a pet, a strong outlet, re-enters some of it. Clean the pre-filter, then clean the room, and the two stop feeding each other.

Filter seating deserves a second look before anything else: bypass is invisible and total. If air is taking the gaps, the HEPA media might as well be decorative.

When it is the room, not the machine#

A unit chronically overloaded with dust is usually a unit working above its room's published minimum, filters load faster, bypass becomes likelier, and re-entrainment follows. Check the CADR against the published row for the floor area, rounded up between sizes.

If the room is bigger than the rating assumed, the dust on your furniture is the symptom and the sizing gap is the cause. The fix is published in a table, not in a bottle.

When to stop troubleshooting#

Stop when a fresh, correctly seated filter and a clean pre-filter still leave dust streaming from the outlet, that is a housing or sealing fault, and it belongs to the manufacturer's support line under warranty.
