Do Air Purifiers Help With Construction dust?
rated, dust CADR applies
works loads are episodic and heavy
The honest answer: construction and renovation dust is particles, and the dust CADR rates its removal. During works, the honest question is not the badge on the machine but the published row for the room and how far above it you are willing to sit.
The honest caveat: a renovation is not a normal load. Containment, sealed doorways, taped sheeting, decides most of the outcome, and the pre-filter becomes a consumable.
Is construction dust a particle?#
It is particles of every class at once: coarse grit from cutting, fine dust from sanding and plaster. All of it is within what CADR rates.
The fine fraction behaves like the smoke class, long airborne, reaching rooms far from the works, which is where the smoke column earns its keep.
What the rating covers#
The dust CADR rates daily-life dust; works exceed it. Use the published row as the floor and sit above it while the works run.
If the central air handler runs during the works, its filter is rated by MERV, EPA’s line is that MERV 13 and above must demonstrate at least 50% removal efficiency for the smallest particles tested.
What sizing means here#
The room row governs, and the works change the load: seal the zone, run a unit sized at or above its published row continuously, and treat MERV 13 furnace filters as the ducted side of the same plan.
After the works, the load returns to daily life and the machine can return to its row.

Compare what the table asks for
Search listings for the published minimum your room needs, then check the smoke CADR on the shortlist before anything else.
Limits and honest caveats#
- Contain first: sealed doorways and sheeting beat any machine sized to an open plan.
- Cut and sand outside where possible; every particle kept off the air is a particle the machine never meets.
- Check and clean the pre-filter daily during works, it is doing heroic, temporary work.
- Expect the main filter to age faster during works than it would in years of ordinary use.
Where the marketing overreaches#
"Renovation-grade" is not a published class. CADR is published per room size, and the table does not have a "building site" column.
A coverage claim that ignores the published 600 sq ft ceiling is doing worse arithmetic than the builder.

One more angle before you decide
The minimum is settled, spend the rest of the decision on noise, filter cost and the smoke CADR.
