Do Air Purifiers Help With Pet dander?
rated, compare the smoke CADR for the smallest particles
dander travels on the fine end of the test range
The honest answer: pet dander, the skin flakes and the proteins that ride on them, is a particle, and particles carry a published rating. Because dander sits at the fine end, EPA’s advice applies cleanly: compare the tobacco-smoke CADR, which represents the smallest particles tested.
The honest caveat: the animal is the source. Grooming, bedding, sofa privileges and the litter tray decide how much dander exists. The machine is rated for the airborne share, not for the cat.
Is pet dander a particle?#
Yes. Dander is shed skin and saliva proteins on microscopic flakes, particles small enough to stay airborne for a long time and settle on everything else.
It is not the fur. Fur is a carrier and a coarse nuisance; the fine dander on it is what the rating addresses.
What the rating covers#
CADR applies to the dander particle share, and the smoke column marks the fine end where dander lives. A unit with a strong tobacco-smoke CADR is the honest pick for an animal household.
The smells of the animal are a separate matter, gases with no published CADR at all.
What sizing means here#
The room minimum still governs: published rows, rounded up between rows, 8-foot ceiling. A living room between the 300 and 400 sq ft rows takes 260 cfm; a bedroom between the 100 and 200 sq ft rows takes 130 cfm.
Dander is a continuous source, so continuous running is the honest default, and filters load steadily. Hair mats the pre-filter; replacement filters are part of the animal’s keep, not an optional extra.

Compare what the table asks for
Search listings for the published minimum your room needs, then check the smoke CADR on the shortlist before anything else.
Limits and honest caveats#
- Grooming and bedding washing are source control; they shrink the load at its origin.
- Keep the pet out of the bedroom if nights are the worst part. The machine helps the room it is in.
- The litter tray and the damp-dog smell are gas-phase and unrated. Ventilation and a clean tray do that work.
- Run the unit continuously while the animal lives indoors; particles return when it stops.
Where the marketing overreaches#
A "pet" badge on the box decorates the same three CADR numbers every machine is tested against. Check the smoke column rather than the cartoon paw print.
"Hypoallergenic pet air" is not a published claim. The published claim is a delivery rate for a room size.

One more angle before you decide
The minimum is settled, spend the rest of the decision on noise, filter cost and the smoke CADR.
