Is household dust a particle?#

It is a committee of particles: coarse grit at the door, fine grey fuzz under the bed, everything in between. All of it is within what CADR rates.

The fine fraction behaves like the smoke class, long airborne, hard to capture, which is why the smoke column is worth reading even for an ordinary dusty home.

What the rating covers#

The dust CADR measures removal of dust-class particles. For a general-purpose machine, it is the column that describes daily life.

For the fine end, EPA’s advice holds: a high tobacco-smoke CADR marks the machines that handle the smallest particles.

What sizing means here#

The published room minimum governs: between the 100 and 200 sq ft rows, 130 cfm; between the 300 and 400 sq ft rows, 260 cfm, rounded up between rows, at an 8-foot ceiling.

Dust is resuspended by motion, so the machine works hardest in lived-in rooms. Units with a washable pre-filter suit the job: dust loads the pre-filter first, and that part is meant to be cleaned, not mourned.

Limits and honest caveats#

• Vacuuming and a doormat are source control; the machine is for what stays airborne.
• Settled dust returns to the air every time it is disturbed, run the unit continuously in occupied rooms.
• Keep the pre-filter clean; in a dusty home it is doing the daily work.
• Dust that settles inside the machine’s clearance zone is dust it cannot reach.

Where the marketing overreaches#

"Dust-locking", "dust-busting" and "allergen-trapping" are not published tests. The published test is a delivery rate for three particle classes.

And a coverage claim larger than the published table, which ends at 600 sq ft, is arithmetic nobody stood behind.
