Do Air Purifiers Help With Mould Spores?
rated, spores are particles
the damp that grows mould is not rated at all
The honest answer: mould spores are particles, and particles carry a published rating. The CADR applies to the spore share that goes airborne, with the smoke column marking how a machine handles the fine end.
The honest caveat: spores are the symptom. The damp is the disease. Fix the moisture source, ventilate, dehumidify, and the musty smell, which is gas-phase and unrated, follows the moisture down rather than waiting for a machine.
Are mould spores a particle?#
Yes. Spores are microscopic particles released by mould colonies, present at some level in almost every breath of outdoor air.
Indoors, the rated question is the airborne share in the room. The unrated fact is the damp that feeds the colony producing them.
What the rating covers#
The CADR rates removal of particles, and spores qualify. For the fine end, EPA’s advice is the tobacco-smoke column.
What no rating covers: the damp smell, the humidity, and the colony on the wall. Those belong to dehumidifiers, ventilation and repairs.
What sizing means here#
The published room minimum governs as always, rows rounded up between rows, 8-foot ceiling assumed. Spores drift between rooms, so the room you size is the room the unit sits in.
If damp is under control and spores are the remaining concern, a unit at or above the room’s published row doing continuous work is the rated part of the plan.
Limits and honest caveats#
- Find and fix the moisture source first; a purifier cannot dry a wall.
- A musty smell is gas-phase and unrated. Dehumidify and ventilate.
- Disturbing a mould patch, wiping, scraping, spikes the airborne share. Run the machine during and after.
- Dead spores are still particles; killing the colony does not remove the residue.
Where the marketing overreaches#
"Kills mould" is not a published claim, and killing was never the problem. Removal of the airborne particle share is the rated work; the box that says otherwise is selling a smell.
Coverage claims beyond the 600 sq ft end of the published table remain arithmetic nobody published.
