Air Purifiers and Radon: The Honest Answer
no rating, an air purifier is not the fix for radon
radon is a radioactive gas; testing and mitigation are the route
The honest answer up front: an air purifier is not the fix for radon. Radon is a radioactive gas that seeps from the ground into buildings, and EPA publishes no CADR for any gas, radon included. A particle rating says nothing about it, and a box that implies otherwise is misusing one.
Radon has a proper route: test the home, and where levels warrant it, mitigate at the source. That route is established, physical and permanent. It does not involve a plug-in appliance, and this page will not pretend otherwise.
Why there is no rating#
CADR is defined for particles, smoke, dust and pollen, delivered by a machine to a room. Radon is an invisible, odourless gas rising from the soil, and no standardised delivery test exists for it.
Some marketing gestures at capturing radon’s decay products, which attach to particles. Even taken at face value, that addresses the residue while the gas itself, the thing the guidance targets, keeps arriving from the ground beneath.
What actually works#
- Test: a radon test kit for the home, followed by long-term measurement where indicated.
- Mitigate: sub-slab depressurisation fitted by a qualified professional, the established fix.
- Seal entry points and improve under-floor ventilation as supporting measures, not the headline.
- Re-test after mitigation. The gas is patient; the measurement proves the fix.
What the box implies#
A purifier box that mentions radon is borrowing gravity from a problem it cannot touch. The three particle columns on that box are real; their relevance to radon is not.
If a seller leads with radon and closes with a CADR, they have skipped the only two steps that matter: test, and mitigate.
