The honest answer: the dust mite allergen is a particle, faecal matter and body fragments, and particles carry a published rating. The smoke CADR is the column that marks the fine end where the allergen sits.
The honest caveat: the mites themselves do not fly. They live in mattresses, bedding and soft furnishings, eating skin flakes. A purifier catches the airborne share of the allergen; it does not touch the colony. Washing bedding and managing humidity do that work.
What is actually floating?#
Not mites, for the most part. The allergen is in their faecal particles and body fragments, which are small, dry and easily airborne when bedding is disturbed.
That makes the machine’s role precise: it removes the allergen particles that go airborne, particularly around the bed, where the source lives.
What the rating covers#
The allergen particle falls in the fine-dust class, and the published CADR applies to it. Compare the tobacco-smoke column for the smallest particles, per EPA’s advice.
No machine carries a rating for "mites". Any box claiming one is decorating the same three particle figures.
What sizing means here#
The bedroom row governs: a floor between the 100 and 200 sq ft rows takes a published minimum of 130 cfm at an 8-foot ceiling.
Because the source is the bed, placement matters more than usual: run it nearby with clearance, and compare bedroom-sized units on the smoke column rather than the dust one.

Where the marketing overreaches#
"Kills dust mites" is the classic one. Even a machine that circulated all the air in the room does not reach inside a mattress, and killing is not removing, the particle remains.
The honest claim a box can make is a CADR for a room size. Everything else is upholstery.
