Air Purifiers for Renters
Renting removes most of the usual air-cleaning installations, no ducts you own, no filters you service, no permission for anything permanent. A room purifier is the rare air-quality purchase that asks for none of that.
What renting does not remove is arithmetic. Sizing still applies, and the furnace filter conversation is worth having with the person who owns the furnace.
What renting changes, and what it does not#
It changes the install: no ducts, no fittings, no landlord permissions, and nothing to forfeit from the deposit. A portable purifier moves with you, which makes it the most landlord-proof air-quality purchase there is.
It does not change the sizing. The published CADR minimum for the room's floor area applies to rented rooms exactly as it applies to owned ones, and air does not check the tenancy agreement.
Sizing still applies#
Measure the room you actually sleep and sit in, read the published minimum for that area, and round up between rows, rented rooms sit between published sizes like anyone else's. The eight-foot ceiling note applies too; rented ceilings are often not eight feet.
One renter-specific advantage: you can size the unit to the room you will use it in next, as well as the one you are in now. A unit sized for ordinary rooms with CADR headroom survives the next move better than one tuned to this flat's quirks: compare small-room air purifiers that need no installation.
Suggested next step
Compare what the table asks for
Search listings for the published minimum your room needs, then check the smoke CADR on the shortlist before anything else.
The landlord angle: furnace filters#
If the building has forced air, the furnace filter is doing air-quality work on someone else's maintenance schedule. You breathe what it catches, or fails to.
A polite request for a MERV 13 filter, the line EPA says must demonstrate at least 50% removal of the smallest particles tested, costs a landlord little and is the rare request that arrives with a citation attached. Offer to supply it yourself if the threshold is apathy.
What to take with you#
The unit moves; the filters are model-specific. A purifier whose filters are ordinary, stocked items is a portable decision, one whose filters are proprietary is a lease on a supply chain.
Check filter availability before the first purchase and the purchase travels with you for years. The deposit comes back; the filter economics stay.

One more angle before you decide
The minimum is settled, spend the rest of the decision on noise, filter cost and the smoke CADR.
